Scam 1992 tells the story of Harshad Mehta, a stockbroker who is notorious for his financial crimes - primarily his involvement in the 1992 Indian stock scam. The show is based on the book The Scam by journalist Suchita Dalla, who was also one of the first people to sound the alarm about Mehta. After Mehta was exposed and arrested, the Bombay Stock Exchange collapsed, hurting the savings of many people.
Mehta's stock market manipulations also brought to light the many loopholes in the Indian banking and BSE transaction system, which were later filled in by new rules. Mehta was sentenced to five years in prison and died of a heart attack in 2001.
