Reginald VelJohnson, born as Reginald Johnson on August 16, 1952, is an American actor renowned for his portrayals of police officer characters. He is best known for his role as Carl Winslow on the long-running sitcom "Family Matters," which aired from 1989 to 1998. Additionally, VelJohnson played LAPD Sergeant Al Powell in the iconic films "Die Hard" and "Die Hard 2."

Early in his life, Reginald VelJohnson was born in the Queens borough of New York City to Eva, a nurse's aide, and Dan, a hospital attendant. His father left the family, which included his brother Barry, when VelJohnson was 13 years old. Subsequently, his mother married John Reilly. VelJohnson attended Benjamin N. Cardozo High School.

VelJohnson pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater from New York University, where he had the opportunity to work with Joseph Papp's Black/Hispanic Shakespeare Company. Notable actors such as Morgan Freeman and CCH Pounder were among his fellow actors during this time. Early in his acting career, he decided to change his name from Reginald Johnson (his birth name) to Reginald VelJohnson. He later explained that he altered the spelling "because I wanted a name people would remember."
