Pradeep Sarkar, born on April 30, 1955, in Calcutta, West Bengal, was a prominent Indian filmmaker known for his work in advertising, music videos, and feature films. After graduating with a gold medal from the Delhi College of Art in 1979, he spent 17 years as a creative director in mainstream advertising before transitioning to directing advertisement films within the advertising circles of Delhi.
Sarkar's production house worked on commercials for notable clients such as Tata Yellow Pages, ICICI Prudential, and Onida KY Thunder. His black and white TV commercials for Aaj Tak won both the Rapa Award and the Best Director of the Year Award at the Abby Awards.In addition to his success in commercials, Sarkar made a mark as a prolific music video director, with notable works including Shubha Mudgal's "Ab Ke Saawan," Euphoria's "Dhoom Pichak Dhoom" and "Maaeri," Sultan Khan's "Piya Basanti," and Bhupen Hazarika's "Ganga."
Sarkar ventured into feature films with the critically acclaimed "Parineeta," which won the National Film Award for Best Debut Film of a Director. The film received widespread acclaim for its emotional depth, visual appeal, and music. Sarkar won the Best Debutant Director at the Screen Awards and the Hottest Young Director at the Stardust Awards in 2006. "Parineeta" went on to win five Filmfare Awards. His subsequent feature films, "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag," "Lafangey Parindey," and "Mardaani," were all produced by Yash Raj Films. In 2018, Sarkar directed the film "Eela," produced by Ajay Devgn Films.
