List of Carl Lumbly Movies

Born on August 14, 1951, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Jamaican immigrants, Carl Winston Lumbly has become a distinguished American actor, renowned for his versatile roles on both the small and big screens. Lumbly's journey into acting took an unexpected turn from his initial career as a journalist in Minnesota. While on assignment for a story about a workshop theatre, he found himself cast as an actor. This serendipitous moment marked the beginning of his foray into the world of performing arts.
A graduate of South High School in Minneapolis and Macalester College in nearby St. Paul, Lumbly embarked on his acting career in earnest. His early experiences included joining an improvisational company in San Francisco, where he honed his craft for two years. Lumbly's career took a significant turn when he responded to a newspaper ad seeking "two black actors for South African political plays." This audition led to his involvement in productions of Athol Fugard's plays, including "Sizwe Bansi is Dead" and "The Island," where he toured alongside the then-unknown Danny Glover.
Television audiences came to know Lumbly as NYPD detective Marcus Petrie on the CBS police drama Cagney & Lacey. He broke new ground as television's first Black superhero, M.A.N.T.I.S., showcasing his ability to bring diverse characters to life. His impact extended to the animated realm, where he lent his voice to J'onn J'onnz/Martian Manhunter in Justice League, Static Shock, and Justice League Unlimited, contributing significantly to the DC Animated Universe.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Lumbly portrayed Isaiah Bradley, the first Black super-soldier, in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) and Captain America: Brave New World (2024), showcasing his ability to navigate between major franchises.
